CLEAR LINK Networks Green Eco-Friendly Datacenter and Co-Location Facility
What is a green business?

A sustainable business is any organization that participates in environmentally-friendly (or "green") activities to ensure that all operations, products, and manufacturing activities adequately address current environmental concerns.

What is CLEAR LINK Networks doing to become "green"?

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

CLEAR LINK Networks closely monitors our power consumption and we make every effort to reduce our usasge by replacing incandescent lighting with LED or CFL bulbs, by replacing light switches with automatic motion sensing switches and incorporating timers in corporate/common/hallway areas to ensure we reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.

REDESIGNED HVAC COOLING

In Q3 2009, CLEAR LINK Networks redesigned and imlpemented a hot-aisle/cold-aisle cooling, so that we can concentrate cooling directly into the racks.  During the engineering and retrofit process, we've upgraded and re-ducted all of our server-floor area and have taken special care to ensure no holes/leaks in the walls, ceilings or conduits between co-location areas to make sure none of our cooling is wasted.

REDUNDANCY

Many companies invest in redundant cooling and heating and power systems (such as CLEAR LINK Networks), however these systems use double the energy to produce the same amount of cooling/heating and power.  This ideaology helps prepare facilities for growth and times of peak performance, but the result is a maximum power flow where only a fraction of that power is put to use.  CLEAR LINK has re-evaluated how we prodive cooling  and power redundancy from multiple active systems (called an active/active configuration) to a much more efficient active/passive system (where the adequate amount of cooling is in operation, however additional cooling/heating or UPS units can be added if a primary unit fails or heat load/capacity  increases beyond a pre-determined threshold).

EQUIPMENT

CLEAR LINK uses and implements scalable and modular equipment (whenever possible) for maximum efficiency and growth.  Scalable blade servers can concentrate more computing power in a smaller space, requiring less power to cool.  Also scalable systems operate at your minimum power requirements and give you the capacity to grow into higher power consumption when you're ready.

VIRTUALIZATION

Most servers are underused, because they're loaded with archaic information or software that only needs processing some of the time.  With storage virtualization, CLEAR LINK makes applications "mobile" between servers nodes thereby allowing us to shut down unneeded servers.  Virtualization devices keep track of your server space and dynamically remap applications to different physical locations as necessary to acheive optimal efficiency.  This, information can be made location independent and redirected across multiple I/O devices as need/load/capacity increases.

ENERGY-STAR APPLIANCES

Although the EPA hasn't released Energy Star standards for servers or mission-critical equipment, we purchase other appliances, such as HVAC systems and general office equipment that do meet current standards.

RECYCLE LEGACY SYSTEMS

Archaic systems are less efficient than new ones, CLEAR LINK's upgrade and replacement strategy, coupled with virtualization allow us to consolidate legacy systems into just a few servers, instead of 40-50 servers.  Because servers contain huge amounts of toxic waste materials, we NEVER throw a machine in the trash.  CLEAR LINK Networks regularly donates our legacy systems to non-profit or educational organizations whoc can make use of this equipment.

WORK PLACE HEALTH

CLEAR LINK Networks takes steps to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for their customers and employees by using less-toxic (and organic, if available) cleaning supplies and recycled materials.
